About our products
Our higher end fashion jewellery is made with Heavy Rhodium or Yellow Gold Electro Plate (HGE) over Brass or Sterling Silver. Most items have 100 millionths of gold or more. If a product is sterling silver, gold or has genuine stones it is described as such in the item description. Most sterling silver products are plated with rhodium. If an item is not described as sterling silver, it is fashion jewellery, with man made stones, unless otherwise stated. If you have any questions, please contact us prior to selecting your jewellery, so we can answer them for you.

Information
| • | Amber is fossilised tree sap and has been used in jewellery for many years. Easily fashioned and with beautiful warm colours it rapidly became a valuable ancient commodity. Colour varies from semi-translucent through honey yellow to dark brown, but green and red tones are not unusual. Most of the Amber seen in jewellery comes from the Baltic. |
| • | Amethyst is a variety of quartz that was once thought to bring peace of mind to the wearer, and help discourage drunkenness! It comes in colours that range from transparent lavender through to dark purple, and is a relatively hard, brilliant and versatile stone. Probably one of the most beautiful stones available for an affordable price. Usually comes from Brazil , Canada and the Ural mountains . Store out of direct sunlight and away from heat as it may fade. Store correctly and it will last indefinitely. |
| • | Black Agate is often seen in evening jewellery and paired with a Marcasite finish. It is a form of Chalcedony and has banded colours caused by impurities in the stone. Because of this and due to being very porous, it is often dyed to give a uniform colour. Traditionally sourced from Germany since the sixteenth century it now also comes from other regions including South America . |
| • | Blue Topaz has become very popular. Topaz is colourless and although Blue Topaz is naturally found it is rare, so most blue stones have been heat treated or irradiated to enhance their light to medium blue tone. These stones cannot be distinguished from natural coloured stones. Topaz can also be found in other colour shades from light green, light yellow, and violet, to colourless or 'white'. A lovely, clear, brilliant and hard stone which comes from North and South America , Sri Lanka , and Siberia . |
| • | Citrine is usually of a yellow amber to amber brown colour, slightly less brilliant than Topaz. The stone makes great looking jewellery but must be cared for as Citrine is a relatively soft stone and may be damaged by careless storage. Citrine is a member of the Quartz family and much Citrine is produced by heat treating very pale Amethyst stones. Said to be named from the French for 'lemon', the stone is commonly found in Brazil , Madagascar and Spain. |
| • | CZ (Cubic Zirconia) is the best diamond imitation and with a good CZ stone it is difficult to tell them apart from diamonds without an untrained eye. However, CZ stones are softer and will scratch relatively easily. Diamonds can only be scratched by another diamond. CZ stones come in a variety of colours and are the mainstay of costume jewellery. Like all stones they must be cared for as they will show wear quickly if abused. |
| • | Diamonds are the simplest of gemstones in chemical make-up, being superheated and pressure formed carbon. But its hardness, durability and brilliance make this stone highly sought after and the queen amongst gems. Transparent or colourless diamonds are the most popular but the most valuable occur in a variety of colours ranging from pink, light blue, light green, lavender, and the rarest of all, red. Only yellow or brown stones sell for less than the colourless stones seen mostly in modern affordable jewellery. Diamonds mainly come from South Africa , Angola , Russia , Australia and Canada . |
| • | DESIGNO is luminous coloured resin jewellery combined with sterling silver and anti-tarnish rhodium. The resin is extremely durable and non-scratch able. |
| • | Emerald is a relatively hard green variety of the mineral beryl family. However, they require care as they can fracture easily due to their natural geological make-up and even the finest emeralds are not flawless. The best stones are a spectral or grass green colour. The best stones from Colombia also have a hint of blue. Due to popularity and demand extremely good synthetic stones are widely used in the jewellery market. Emeralds are mainly sourced from Colombia and Brazil , but also come from Zambia , Pakistan , Afghanistan , Russia and India . |
| • | FILIGREE - Lacework type metal ornamentation is made from thin twisted wire usually in silver or gold. Over many hundreds of years, craftsmen have perfected the art of making fine sterling silver filigree. Inspired by the beauty of the natural world around them, their dedication and attention to detail results in work that is so delicate and beautiful that it is often compared to the fine threads of a spider's web. The process of manufacturing filigree is a traditional craft carried out in many parts of the world including India , the Far East, Malta , Italy etc. Quality varies; the jewellery in our collection is of the highest quality. |
| • | Garnet is one of the few untreated gems in jewellery today. It is moderately hard, brilliant and durable and available in colours ranging from reds, pinks, yellows, greens and orange. Traditionally said to promote sincerity and to stop bleeding, and bringing honours to those that wear it! An under rated gemstone which is commonly found in North America, South Africa , Australia and Argentina . |
| • | HGE - Heavy gold electroplate. Usually refers to jewellery with a base material of brass or silver that has been over plated with heavy gold or rhodium electro plate to give a high quality finish. |
| • | Jade has long been revered by the Chinese and was the emperor's stone. It is a tough but not hard stone that is translucent to opaque in appearance. Most jewellery is made from Nephrite Jade which is less expensive than the richer toned Jadeite, and comes in a variety of light and mottled colours, including a range of greens, lavenders and violets. Jade also comes in white and was thought by the ancient Chinese to settle stomach problems. White jade is rare. Jade needs to be carefully stored to avoid breaks and scratching. Truly an imperial gemstone. |
| • | Lapis Lazuli was highly prized by the ancient Egyptians as having great power and divine favour. The best Lapis comes as a natural opaque stone of intense, brilliant, deep blue colour, sometimes having gold coloured or silver coloured flecks of Pyrite. It also appears in jewellery with purple tints or without the Pyrite flecks. The finest Lapis from Afghanistan is expensive and hard to obtain, therefore most Lapis that appears in jewellery today is of lower quality and has probably been colour enhanced to meet fashion demands. Nonetheless, it is still a mystical and beautiful gemstone. |
| • | Malachite is a copper ore that comes in deep and vibrant green, marked with bands of concentric green striping. Opaque and capable of high polished finish, the stone is however relatively soft and should never be cleaned with any substance containing ammonia. In fact as with most gemstones, clean gently only with mild soapy water. |
| • | MILLEFIORI is a type of Murano glass that has been incorporated with various layers of colours to create beautiful flower-like patterns. Millefiori, which literally means "a thousand flowers", is the denomination of a type of cylindrical, long glass rod which contains a specific pattern along its entire length, so that when cut into slices from one end, the particular pattern will be revealed. It is completely handmade of authentic Murano glass. This style of glass has been around since the Middle Ages and more recently, has been used in fine jewellery. |
| • | Moonstone is from the Feldspar family and is a transparent, milky white in which can be seen an opalescent white or blue light within the stone. The more blue in the colour the better the stone, but fine blue stones are now rare. Moonstone is relatively soft and the best stones come from Sri Lanka , but are also found in Madagascar , Brazil and India . |
| • | Onyx is a banded, semi translucent to opaque quartz and comes in shades of red, orange, brown and cream, with white alternating bands. The banding in Onyx is straight while it is curved in another variety of quartz called Agate. 'Black Onyx' is not actually onyx but a stone known as Chalcedony which is nearly always dyed. Onyx offers some fantastic colours and stones for modern jewellery. |
| • | Peridot is a lovely transparent yellow-green to deep green stone otherwise known as Olivine. Rich in colour if not brilliant, the gem is highly popular in modern jewellery. Mined for nearly 4,000 years in Egypt , the prized pure deep green stones of the finest gems are rare and expensive. Luckily, good quality gems are widely available and offer fantastic colours for affordable jewellery. Moderately hard but chips and scratches if not cared for. |
| • | Quartz The most common and versatile of all gemstones which includes transparent varieties such as Amethyst, Citrine, Rose and Smokey Quartz, and Rock Crystal, and translucent to opaque varieties such as Agate, Chalcedony, Carnelian, Jasper and Tiger's Eye. Quartz is reasonably hard and comes in a very wide range of fantastic colours and markings that help create great looking jewellery. Quartz is found worldwide. |
| • | Ruby has been a prized gem throughout history with colours ranging from purple-red and blue-red, to the finest of stones of pure red. As the best stones are exceedingly expensive and beyond the purse of most mortals, lesser grade stones - but nonetheless beautiful - are used in jewellery. Ruby is the second hardest gem after diamonds and therefore is ideal for settings. Main sources today are Afghanistan , Kashmir , Thailand and Vietnam . |
| • | Sapphire is highly prized in its spectral or velvet blue colour, but can occur any almost any colour. Sapphires are from the family of hard mineral known as corundum, a family which also includes rubies. The rarest and finest blue stones come from Burma and Kashmir, with Sri Lanka producing less valuable but beautiful pastel blue sapphires. Common dark blues and other coloured sapphires, including Madagascar pink, are sourced from South America, Africa, Australia and the USA . |
| • | Sterling Silver means that an item contains at least 92.5% silver. |
| • | Tanzanite Increasingly popular and now commonly seen in jewellery. Tanzanite was not considered a gem until 1967. Found in Tanzania , its sapphire blue-purple colour has been used by many designers as a beautiful and affordable alternative to rare blue sapphires. A green Tanzanite is now available but limited in supply at present. As with sapphires, Tanzanite is relatively hard for a mineral but can be brittle as a cut gem and requires care. Not a stone recommended for wearing in a ring. |
| • | Turquoise Known alternatively as the 'Turkish Stone', this sky blue or duck egg blue mineral was highly prized by ancient civilisations and retains popularity throughout the world today. Buddhists still revere the stone as a symbol of courage, success and love. Turquoise is found in opaque light to dark blue or green-blue colours. The rarest of blue Turquoise comes from Persia ( Iran ), but most of the mineral found in jewellery today is sourced from the USA and Mexico . Turquoise must not be stored in direct sunlight as it will darken and age. Turquoise should never come into contact with soap and grease. Please remove jewellery before washing or applying perfume or make-up! |
| • | Zircon is a natural stone and should not be confused with the synthetic Cubic Zirconia. Alternatively known as 'hyacinth', zircons are brilliant transparent stones that come in yellow, brown, orange and red, although the most common is the colourless zircon that is used as a diamond alternative. These stones are also colour treated to produce blue Zircon and this may have contributed to the poor reputation of the stone, even though it is in fact a beautiful natural stone when untreated. Zircon is moderately hard but prone to chipping so it is not recommended for rings. |
