Cufflinks have been worn by men for many years in order to fasten the double cuffs of their shirts - known as French cuffs - before the time when they were buttoned for easy fastening. They were a development from the ribbons which used to be used to tie the shirt cuffs together.
They consist of a 'link' which joins the folds of the cuffs together decorated with various designs which provides an attractive adornment for the wearer. They have been around for several centuries in men's fashion, although at first they were the domain of the rich members of society who had precious gems and gold and silver in their cufflinks.
Today cufflinks can be made to all sorts of shapes and designs, many being enamelled or containing false gems. There are the executive type with stylish designs and then there are the themed cufflinks, such as national flags, sports insignia and names engraved on them.
They can also be used by women for fastening double cuffs on blouses.
